We are official providers of the D.C. Storefront Improvement Program. Through it, property and business owners located within select DC Business Districts are eligible for design assistance and storefront improvements through a matching grant typically up to $20,000 per façade. The Program’s goal is to improve the appearance of commercial districts in transitional areas, making them more appealing to customers and potential new business operators. Eligible property and business owners located are encouraged to participate.
The Storefront Improvement Program may contribute half or sometimes up to two-thirds of design and construction costs while the owner is required to provide a matching contribution that is approximately one-third to one-half of the project costs. Eligible improvements include repairing or replacing existing awnings, lighting, signs, doors, windows, exterior damage or finishes. This is not to be confused with D.C.’s “Great Streets” program which has different eligibility, different target areas and has a different funding source.
The Program is administered across many neighborhoods of the District by DC Facades, a local Certified Business Enterprise, and supported by local nonprofit partners who received support from the D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). DC Facades and its partners will coordinate the work which means providing: building repair assessments, architectural drawings, contractor procurement, construction permits, project oversight and reporting. However, the Program still requires your cooperation to make this project happen.
Applications will be accepted to the Program on a rolling basis while grant funds are available. Different neighborhoods have different amounts of funding available as our team tries to avoid having neighborhoods competing for funds. Drawings and improvements will be completed in the order that individuals submit completed applications and are approved to participate.
